The wonders of Agnus castus…

Agnus castus maybe familiar to you as the helpful hormone herb for women, which indeed it is but to be a lot more specific, it’s VERY helpful for one of the two types of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

There are two main hormones involved in the female menstrual cycle – progesterone and oestrogen. Some women have high levels of oestrogen with low levels of progesterone, whilst others have low oestrogen with high progesterone. Agnus castus is helpful for those experiencing the first type of imbalance – high oestrogen, low progesterone causing the following PMS symptoms:  heavy periods, short cycles, angry/irritable mood, sore breasts, premenstrual fluid retention and sometimes a tendency towards fibroids and endometriosis. In this situation of imbalance, Agnus castus levels out the hormones, upping the progesterone whilst lowering the oestrogen.

In order to see results, it’s best to take an Agnus castus tincture* every day of the entire cycle, not just in the week running up to your period and it takes between 1 and 3 cycles for effects to show. Once the menstrual cycle has improved sufficiently there is no longer a need to take Agnus castus.

However, bear in mind that Agnus castus should NOT be taken with any kind of hormonal contraceptive (pill, mini-pill, marina coil or implant) or hormonal anti-cancer medication. Hormonal contraception works by purposely unbalancing the hormones, therefore stopping fertilisation and with Agnus castus’ hormone balancing skills it may counteract the contraception!

Agnus castus is not only for PMS. It can be used in the early stages of the menopause where some women suffer from heavy frequent periods. In this instance, Agnus castus can lighten the periods, making them that bit more bearable. However, symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, low libido, aches and pains are caused by falling oestrogen levels, therefore, Agnus castus is not suitable and sufferers a should try a product which contains fermented soy isoflavones*
